No. They may not actively attempt to gain that information, but are not required to inform the opponent of accidentally revealed information.

What is the definition of private information?

What is hidden information?
Hidden information refers to the faces of cards and other objects at which the rules of the game and format do not allow you to look.
What is a tournament shortcut?
An action taken by players to skip parts of the technical play sequence without explicitly announcing them.
Why are tournament shortcuts essential?

They allow players to play in a clear fashion without getting bogged down in the minutia of the rules.
If a player wishes to create a new tournament shortcut, what must they do?

Be clear where the game state will end up as part of the request.

Can a player interrupt their own tournament shortcut?

Yes, if they explain how they are deviating from it or at which point in the middle they wish to take an action.
When is a player not allowed to create a shortcut or modify an in-use shortcut?

When they don't announce the modification, in order to create ambiguity in the game.

What happens if a player requests priority in the middle of a shortcut and takes no action with it?

The request for priority is nullified and priority is returned to the player that originally had it.

When are you passing priority until when you say "Go" (or "your turn" or "done", etc.)

Until an opponent has priority in your end step.

Yes. If you add a group of items to the stack without explicitly retaining priority and a player wishes to take action at a point in the middle, actions should be reversed up to that point.

When are you passing priority until when you say "no attacks"?

Until an opponent has priority in the end of combat step.

If you cast a spell or ability with X in its mana cost without specifying the value of X, what is it assumed to be?
The total of all mana currently available in your pool.

If you announce choices for a spell or activated ability that are not normally made until resolution, are you allowed to change your mind when it resolves?

Only if the opponent responds to the spell or ability, otherwise you must adhere to that choice.

If an opponent asks about a choice usually made at resolution, can he/she then respond to the spell?

No. It is assumed he/she has passed priority and allowed that spell to resolve if he/she asks about a choice made on resolution.
Can a player refuse to pay a cost of zero?

Only if he or she announces that they are not paying it. Otherwise it is assumed that they chose to pay it.

If you cast a spell or ability that targets an object on the stack without specifying which spell, what happens?

It is assumed you are targeting the legal target closest to the top of the stack.

If a player declares attackers without specifying if they are attacking the opponent or the opponent's planeswalkers, what is assumed to have happened?

It is assumed they have attacked the player.
What happens if a player chooses a planeswalker as the target of a spell that can only target a player?

It is assumed he/she is choosing to target the player and redirect damage to the planeswalker. He/she must adhere to that choice unless an opponent responds.

In 2HG, if attacking creatures deal damage and their controller does not specify which head is assigned that damage, what happens?

Damage is assumed to be assigned to the defending team's primary head.

When are members of the same team forbidden from communicating with each other verbally?

If they had an opportunity to acquire hidden information (for example, after speaking to spectators following their own match while a teammate is still playing.)

During a team draft, what kind of written notes are allowed?

None. Notes of any kind during drafts are prohibited.
Who reviews all cheating allegations?


The Head Judge.




All DQ's are subject to DCI review, and further penalties may be assessed.


When is the decision to drop, concede, or intentionally draw considered collusion / bribery?

If that decision is influenced by the offer of any reward or incentive.

If your opponent offers you a bribe, how are you penalized?

You and your opponent will be penalized in the same manner UNLESS you immediately call for a judge when you receive such an offer.

Are players ever allowed to agree to split prizes?
Yes, as long as it does not occur in exchange for a match result or the dropping of a player from the tournament.
How are the rules for splitting prizes different during the announced last round of the single elimination portion of a tournament?

Players may divide the prizes as they wish. One of the players at each table must agree to drop from the tournament. Players are then awarded prizes according to their resulting ranking.
What are some examples of random methods to determine a winner of a game, and which ones are allowed?


No random methods are allowed. Examples include (but are not limited to):




rolling a die, flipping a coin, arm wrestling, turning over cards from the top of your deck, playing any other game, etc.


Are players allowed to use information regarding match or game scores of other tables when deciding to concede or intentionally draw?

Yes, as long as they do not leave their seats or go to great lengths to obtain this information.
When can players agree to end a tournament without playing the rest of the matches?


Only during single elimination rounds, if ALL players still in the tournament agree to split the prizes evenly and end the tournament.




They may also opt to split the prizes but play out the final rounds (only if all players agree to the split).

Who is allowed to wager or bet on any portion (including the outcome) of a tournament?
No one. Not participants, tournament officials, or spectators.
