Six Characteristics of Magic

2. good or for evil.
3. Object/reservoir of force practitioner release knowing right movements or the words. (Harry's wand)
4. Force dormant or latent in natural environment & the practitioner call or conjure it into action.

6. knowledge & ability of practitioner utilize object & accompanying words/movement authenticates or legit. practitioner's role as a magical practitioner.
Two Manifestations or Laws of Magic:
1. Law of Similarity or Imitative Magic
2. Law of Contagion or Contagious Magic
Law of Similarity or Imitative Magic
Like begets like- what is done to one thing will have a similar effect on something else.
General Principle- If you look like, act like etc. you will be like.
Law of Contagion or Contagious Magic
A source (person, groups of people or object) have an essence that gets attached to a medium (clothing, words, attitudes, exuviae (fingernails, blood, urine, etc) that were once in possession/contact with the source (person or persons in a group), once removed still can have profound influence on the source.
Rules of causation-
positive or negative forward causation, positive or negative backward causation.
General Principle of Law of Contagion
General Principle- Law of contagion can either unite/include or separate/exclude, which has either positive or negative consequences. Uniting a group with similar essence is good for group solidarity to illuminate loneliness, but on the flip side of same coin, exclusion from a group can give the in group the justification/rationale to do whatever they want to excluded person or group.
Witchcraft
The unconscious ability to manipulate a SN force-usually for negative results.
Four functions of witchcraft according to Evans Pritchard's work among the Azande
1. Explains unforunate events- the second spear- a non-rational explanation.
2. Brings social tension out in the opens so they can be resolved.
3. Corrects behavior of both the one accused of witchcraft and the one who is accused of misbehavior.
4. Accusations follow lines of tension
