facial feature changes in di george syndrome? lab tests?
- low set ears
- wide-set eyes (hypertelorism) - micrognathia - hypocalcemia / lymphopenia |
why is this disease caught w/in the first week of life ?
b/c infants suffer from hypocalcemia and suffer from hypocalcemic induce tetany (from hypoparathyroidism)
what pouches are involved?
dysmorphogenesis of pouch 3 and 4 in the thymus
- thymus = third pouch - parathyroids --> inferior glands from thrid pouch; superior 2 glands from the 4th pouch |
thymus
- primarly lymphoid organ responsible for t-cell maturation
- dysfunciton --> decrease in all t-cell populations and thus a defcnt CMI response - recurrent chronic/fungal/viral infections |
how is humoral immunity also affected in these patients?
Th cell cytokines (IL-2,4,5) are important for the maturation/proliferation of B-cells
- humoral immunity deteriorates over time as the maternal antibodies are degraded in the baby (~6months) |
