What causes acute suppurative lymphadenitis?
Group A beta-hemolytic STREPTococci and coagulase-positive STAPHylococci
What characterizes acute lymphadenitis?
firm and tender node; overlying tissue is edematous and skin is erythematous
Non-Hodgkin Lymphoma
well-defined, solid malignant neoplasm of the lymphatic system; occur most often in lymph nodes, spleen
Hodgkin Disease
malignant lylmphoma that occurs in late adolescence and young adulthood; painless enlargement of the cervical lymph nodes that is generally asymmetric and inexorable progressive; nodes generally feel firm, almost rubbery
Epstein-Barr Virus Mononucleosis
most common in adolescents and young adults; pharyngitis, fever, fatigue, malaise, splenomegaly; nodes most commonly felt in the anterior and posterior cervical chains
Streptococcal Pharyngitis
sore throat & runny nose; anterior cervical nodes are commonly felt
Toxoplasmosis
single node, chronically enlarged and non-tender; usually in the posterior cervical chain; there may be a history of consuming raw or rare meat; may have cat as a pet
What causes a Retropharyngeal Abscess?
Group A beta-hemolytic streptococci
Roseola Infantum (HHV-6)
high fever for 3-4 days; after fever, morbilliform rash on face and chest; usually affects infants 7-12 months of age
What does herpes simplex cause?
discrete labial and gingival ulcers, high fever, and enlargement of the anterior cervical and submandibular nodes; nodes are firm, discrete, movable, and tender
Cat scratch disease
common cause of chronic lymphadenopathy in children; nodal enlargement lasting > 3 weeks with a primary lesion of the skin or eye
AIDS
auto-immune deficiency syndrome; dysfunction of cell-mediated immunity
What common life threatening diseases are associated with full-blown AIDS?
Kaposi sarcoma, Pneumocystis carinii pneumonia, pulmonary tuberculosis, recurrent pneumonia, and invasive cervical cancer
What are warning signs and symptoms of HIV?
severe fatigue, malaise, weakness, persistent unexplained weight loss, persistent lymphadenopathy, fevers, arthralgias (pain in a joint), and persistent diarrhea
Lymphedema
Congenital Lymphedema (Milroy disease) - hypoplasia and maldevelopment of the lymphatic system, resulting in swelling and grotesque distortion of the extremities

Acquired lymphedema results from trauma to the ducts of regional lymph nodes after surgery or metastasis
What does obstruction of developing lymphatic vessels cause?
lymphangioma & cystic hygroma; lymphangiomas usually occur in the neck or axilla; cystic hygromas may distort the face and neck; feel soft and are fluid-containing
Elephantiasis
massive accumulation of lymphedema throughout the body; caused by the filarial worms, Wuchereria bancrofti or Brugia malayi
