Describe the major functions of the lymphatic system

1. Maintaining fluid balance

2. Filtration

3. Protection

4. Absorption of fats

Identify major parts of the lymphatic system

Where are lymphocytes produced?
In the Red bone marrow
Describe how lymph is formed

Exchange of fluid between capillaries and body tissues results in excess fluids remaining in the tissue (known as Interstitial fluid) Lymph is formed from these excess fluids

Describe the function of lymph nodes

as lymph is transported to the heart, it is filtered through lymph nodes, (dotted along lymphatic vessels).

Most common shape of lymph nodes

kidney shaped, 2cm long
Where are lymph nodes found?

close to the surface of the body, in the groin, armpit and the neck.
What happens in the filtering structure of a lymph node?

Lymph flows through the open space (medullary sinus) where foreign substances are trapped by mesh like reticular fibres. This triggers macrophages and lymphocytes into defence action.

Spleen

largest lymphoid organ, size of a fist with rich blood supply. Located left side of the abdominal cavity beneath the diaphragm, curving around the stomach

Thymus
found overlying the heart in thoracic cavity. During childhood organ is large and most active. with growth it shrinks. Thymus produces hormones that enable T cells to become fully functional (known as IMMUNOCOMPETENT)
