what hormones do thymus produce?
the thymus secretes the hormones, thymopoietin & thymosin.
what makes the thymus a special lymphoid organ? hint: main purpose
the thymus is special in that it functions strictly in T lymphocyte maturation
what are the functions of the lymph nodes?
lymph node functions:
-lymph enters through afferent lymphatic vessels & percolates through lymph sinuses
-most antigenic challenges occur in lymph nodes
-antigens activate B & T lymphocytes
-antigens are then destroyed
-sinuses in nodes contain macrophages
what is the largest lymphoid organ?
spleen is largest lymphoid organ
what are the primary lymphoid organs?
primary lymphoid organs = red bone marrow & thymus
purposes of spleen?
spleen function:
-storage of platelets
-site of hematopoiesis in the fetus
-site of B cell maturation into plasma cells
what is the white pulp of the spleen?
white pulp of spleen = destruction of antigens
what is the red pulp of the spleen?
red pulp of spleen=phagocytosis of bacteria & worn out RBCs, WBCs and platelets
what are effector cells?
EFFECTOR CELLS
lymphocytes that are short lived & respond to pathogen immediately and then die
what are memory cells?
MEMORY CELLS
lymphocytes are long lived & are basis of acquired immunity; wait w/in lymphoid tissues until antigen is encounvtered again & guards against infection
