bronchial epithelium:
-abnormal cells form from exposure to carcinogen -Infiltrate tissue, node, and can metastasize |

(NSCLC)
-Epidermoid/ squamous -giant/large cell -Adenocarcinoma |

Most common in non smokers
Adenocarcinoma
is the most common type of lung cancer. It accounts for 30-40% of lung cancers. It may have no clinical manifestations until there is wide-spread metastasis. |
Squamous cell carcinomas
is the second most common type of lung cancer. It accounts for about 30% of lung cancer and is more common in men. It is a slow-growing cancer, and usually begins in the bronchial tubes. It does not have a strong tendency to metastasis.
Large cell carcinomas
is the least common type of lung cancer, it accounts for about 5-15%. for non small cell lung cancer, it is usually treated surgically. Large cell carcinomas does not always have surgery because of the high rate of metastasis
common problems that arise from lung cancer
-Metastasis
-Oncological emergencies -paraneoplastic syndrome |
paraneoplastic syndrome
associated w/ SCLC hormones secreted by tumor cell
Endocrine dysfunction. |

**paraneoplastic syndrome
-Adrenocorticotropic hormone |
ACTH cushings syndrome

paraneoplastic syndrome
-Antidiuretic hormone |
syndrome of inappropriate antidiuretic hormone (SIADH)

**paraneoplastic syndrome
-Ectopic Insulin |
hyper-Hypoglycemia
Small cell lung cancer
is almost always associated with cigarette smoking. It accounts for about 20% of lung cancers and is the most malignant form. It tends to spread early, and quickly. Chemotherapy is the treatment for this type of cancer. The patient does have a poor prognosis however. Radiation will be used as an adjuvant therapy. Radiation may also be used as a palliative measure.

Superior Vena Cava syndrome
Superior Vena Cava is compressed or obstructed by a tumor growth
can block blood flow to head neck upper trunk |
Superior Vena Cava syndrome early s/s
Superior Vena Cava syndrome late s/s |
edema especially in eyes when waking tightness in shirt collar (stokes syndrome)
edema of arms hands, dyspnea, erthyma, epistaxis (nosebleeds) |
