  • Action: Extension of great toe (MTP) and Dorsiflexion of ankle and foot

Extensor Digitorum Longus

  • PA: Inferior third of the anterior surface of the fibula and interosseous membrae
  • DA: Dorsal base of 5th toe

  • Action: Dorsiflexion of ankle and aids in eversion of the foot

Fibularis Longus

  • PA: Head of the proximal 2/3 of lateral side of fibula
  • DA: Base of first metatarsal and medial cuneiform
  • I: Superficial Fibular (L5,S1,2)
  • Action: Weak plantar flexion of the ankle and eversion of the foot
  • BS: Fibular Artery (off posterior tibial artery)

Fibularis Brevis

  • PA: Distal 2/3 of lateral side of fibula
  • DA: Tuberosity of the fifth metatarsal
  • I: Superficial Fibular (L5,S1,2)
  • Action: Weak plantar flexion and eversion of the foot
  • BS: Fibular artery (off posterior tibial artery)

Gastrocnemius

  • PA: Medial head = popliteal surface of femur, superior to medial condyle, Lateral head = lateral side of lateral femoral chondyle
  • DA: Posterior surface of the calcaneus via achilles
  • I: Tibial Nerve (S1,2)
  • Action: Plantar flexes the ankle, flexes the knee and can supinate the foot
  • BS: Posterior Tibial Artery

Plantaris

  • PA: Inferior end of the lateral supracondylar line of the femur, oblique popliteal ligament (close to lateral head of gastroc)
  • DA: Posterior surface of the calcandus (tendo-calcaneus)
  • I: Tibial Nerve (S1,2)
  • Action: Plantar flexion of the ankle, flexes the knee
  • BS: Posterior Tibial Artery

Soleus

  • PA: Upper quarter and posterior head of fibula, soleal line and middle third of medial border of tibia, tendinous arch between them
  • DA: Posterior surface of calcaneus via achilles
  • I: Tibial Nerve (S1,2)
  • Action: Plantar flexion of the ankle, important for posture during stance
  • BS: Posterior tibial artery

Popliteus

  • PA: Lateral surface of lateral chondyle of femur and lateral meniscus
  • DA: Posterior surface of tibia proximal to soleal line
  • I: Tibial Nerve (L4,5, S1)
  • Action: Weak flexion of the knee and unlock by rotating 5 degrees on fixed tibia or medial rotation on unfixed tibia
  • BS: Fibular Artery

Flexor Digitorum Longus

  • PA: Area of tibia below the soleal line, broad tendon to fibula
  • DA: Distal phalanges of lateral four toes
  • I: Tibial Nerve (S2,3)
  • Action: Flexion of four lateral toes and plantar flexion of foot, support longitudinal arches
  • BS: Fibular Artery

Flexor Hallicus Longus

I: Tibial Nerve (S2,3)


Action: Flexion of the great toe and plantar flexion of the foot, support medial longitudinal arch

Tibialis Posterior

  • PA: Upper 2/3 of tibia, fibula, and interosseous membrane
  • DA: Tuberosity of navicular, the three cuneiforms, cuboid and bases of 2nd, 3rd, and 4th metatarsals
  • I: Tibial Nerve (L4,5)
  • Action: Plantar flexion and inversion of the foot
  • BS: Fibular Artery

Iliacus

  • SA: Superior 2/3 of iliac fossa, ala of sacrum, and anterior sacroiliac ligaments
  • IA: Lesser trochanter of the femur and shaft of the inferior IT and the psoas major tendon
  • I: Femoral Nerve (L2-4)
  • Action: Flexes the thigh and stabilizes the hip joint, acts with psoas major
  • BS: Medial femoral circumflex artery, iliac branch of iliolumbar artery

Psoas Major

  • SA: Transverse process of lumbar vertebrae, sides of the bodies of T12-L5 and intervening discs

  • IA: Strong tendon to the lesser trochanter of femur
  • I: Lumbar plexus via the anterior rami of L2-4 spinal nerves
  • Action: Superiorly = laterally flexes the vertebral column and with the iliacus to flex the trunk, Inferiorly = with iliacus flexes the thigh

Sartorius

  • SA: ASIS
  • IA: Upper anteriomedial aspect of tibia
  • I: Femoral Nerve L2-4
  • Action: Flexion, abduction, and lateral rotation of the thigh, flexion and medial rotation of the leg
