Duration of long-term memory

Can last from two years up to 10 years.

Sherad

Tested how people can remember using photographs you should participate 612 memorable for photos and then mix two packs and got them to pick out the ones they recognised.

Bahrick et al

Showed people aged 17- 74 pictures of old classmates and tested if they recognised them by putting names to faces and vice versa. Evaluation very valid as it was not syllabics it's meaningful but lacks in generalliseabilty.

Capacity

Unlimited

Encoding

For meaning and semantically same expiriment as STM.

STM duration

Peterson and Peterson used 24 students from university gave them a 3 letter word to remember the numbers stopped rehearsal. 90% remembered after 3 seconds and 2% at 18 seconds short term memory lasts around 20 seconds. Evaluation loves generalisability due to lack of age variation. Good reliability because it was an experiment Not very valid as it was not a natural setting.

STM capacity

Miller magic number 7+-2 letters or 5 words that they can chunk together. Jacobs found that average was to remember 7.3 letters and 9.3 for numbers. Numbers are single so are easier. Evaluation for Miller =Cowan found people could only remember 4 digits. All reliable experiments and lack generalisability.

Encoding in STM

For sound or acustically

Encoding. Baddley et al

Sound alike remember in short term memory. They get muddled in long term memory words in long term have meaning. Evaluation no visual cues so it's not valid. It's reliable as it was an experiment. Lacks generalisability as lacks age variation.
