failure of blood cell production due to aplasia of bone marrow cells. cause unknown.
aplastic anemia
reduction in red cells due to excessive destruction. erythrocytes are spheroidal. the spleen destroys red blood cells and removing the spleen imporves the anemia.
hemolytic anemia
lack of mature erythrocytes cause by inability to absorb vitamin B12 into the body. Vitamin B12 cannot be absorbed in the bloodstream without the aid of intrinsic factor. Treatment is vitamin B12 for life
pernicious anemia
a hereditary condition characterized by abnormal shape of erythrocytes and hemolysis. crescent shaped erythrocyte is caused by abnormal type of hemoglobin in the red cell. they cannot pass through small blood vessels normally leading to thrombosis. symptoms include pain, arthralgias, ulcerations.
sickle cell anemia
an inherited defect in the ability to produce hemoglobin, usually seein in persons of mediterranean background. usually leads to hypochromic anemia with diminished hemoglobin content in red cells.
