basic task is to achieve sense of competence and initiative; if not allowed to make own decisions they often develop guilt over taking initiatives
School age: Industry vs. inferiority
child needs to expand understand of world, continue to develop appropriate gender identity; basic task is to achieve a sense of industry, which refers to setting and attaining goals
Adolescence: Identity vs. role confusion
time for transition between childhood and adulthood; time for testing limits and establishing new identity; major conflict center on clarification of self identity, life goals, and life's meaning
Young adulthood: Intimacy vs. isolation
developmental task at this time is to form intimate relationships; failure to achieve intimacy can lead to alienation and isolation
Middle age: Generativity vs. stagnation
need to go beyond self and family and be infolved in helping the next generation; time of adjusting to the discrepancy between one's dreams and one's accomplishments
Later life: Integrity vs. despair
if one looks back on life with few regrets and feels personally worthwhile, ego integrity results
