What's the difference between "aru" and "motte iru"?
Motte iru refers to something you own--possessions. Aru refers to things that exist--relatives, problems, etc.
I had a small house.
Watashi wa chiisai ie ga arimashita. (Note-even though the house is a possession "aru" is used to be polite)
I did not have a small house
Chiisai ie ga arimasen deshita.
Jana had a difficult problem.
Jana san wa muzukashii mondai ga arimashita.
Jana did not have a difficult problem.
Jana san wa muzukashii mondai ga arimasen deshita.
My parents had a big car.
Ryoushin wa ookiina jidousha o motte imashita.
My grandmother did not have a big car.
Sobo wa ookiina jidousha o motte imasen deshita.
