Alliteration
A literary device where words are used in quick succession and begin with letters that make the same sound.
The round rock roared.
Allusion
A reference to a person,place,or thing from literature, history, mythology, etc. from a previous era or written work.
Assonance
The repetition of similar vowel sounds that are close together.
Consonance
The repetition of quick identical consonant sounds, often at the end of a word.
Epic
A long story told in elevated language (usually poetry), which tells of the great deeds of a hero who embodies the values of a particular society.
Epic Hero
The main character in an epic whose heroic actions characterize the values of a particular society.
Epic Simile
A comparison of heroic events to more easily understand everyday occurrences; it may take more than just one line;still uses "likes" or "as" in the same way that a "regular" simile would.
Epithet
An adjective or phrase that is regularly used to describe a person, place, or thing.
Free Verse
Poetry that has no regular meter or rhyme scheme.

Latin for " in the middle of things";when a story begins "in the middle".
Invocation
A calling to a muse for inspiration.
Irony
When what is expected to happen does not actually happen; often, it is the opposite that actually occurs.
Myth
A traditional story that is based on a particular culture; it is usually religious and/or explains a belief,ritual, or natural phenomenon.
Omen
A good or bad sign of something that is going to happen; it may take the form of a symbol.
Personification
When non-human things are given human characteristics.
Rhapsode
A singer of tales; a reciter of poetry.
Stanza
A group of consecutive lines in a poem that form a single unit of poetry.
