Abstract

Something that cannot be perceived by the senses(ideas or concepts)



Ex. Truth, Communism, love, success

Allegory

A story that has a second meaning beneath the obvious one



Ex. Animal Farm(Russian Revolution), The Chronicles of Narnia(Jesus' life)

Allusion

A reference to something from literature, history, mythology or the bible



Ex. Chocolate is a woman Achilles heel(Reference to Greek mythology where Achilles was invincible all except his heel-a weakness)

Alliteration

The repetition of consonant sounds at the beginning of a word



Ex. Slimy slithering snake, Big Black Bear

Analogy

A comparison of two similar things where the familiar is used to explain the unknown(similes and metaphors are tools of analogies)



Ex. "I feel like a fish out of water"(uncomfortableness in surroundings), "It's like finding a needle in a haystack"(expressing uniqueness or rarity)

Analysis

A close examination of a literary work



Ex. Deciphering poems, short stories, novels, etc.

Anecdote

A short, often amusing narrative. Adding personal knowledge or experience to the topic of discussion
