Plot
Beginning, middle, and end of a novel; the story line
Point of view
Perspective from which the story is told
Unreliable narrator
A narrator that cannot accurately tell the story for various reasons presented in the story
First person narrator
When the narrator tells the story from his/her point of view; uses "I", "me", etc.
Third person
When the story is told from an outside perspective; uses "he", "her", etc.
Objective
Purpose of a line, plot or theme
Omniscient
A perspective that switches between many characters, and discusses their thoughts, feeling, etc.
Limited omniscient
A point of view in which the narrator sees into the minds of some, but not all the characters. Most typically this perspective sees through the eyes on one major or minor character.
Characterization
Traits and personalities of characters
Protagonist
Main character of the book, often considering the hero due to admirable traits
Antagonist
Opposition to the protagonist, often considered the villain
Flat character
A character who is one-side, and accentuates one aspect of a person. (don't see much)
Round character
A character who is multi-sided, and has many differing traits that reflects the nature of an actual human. (see more personality)
Static character
A character who does not change throughout the story
Dynamic character
A character who goes through a change during the story
Stereotype
A generalized trait that applies to one particular race, religion, nationality, etc.
Stock character
A certain type of character that often appears in literature; the "underdog" and the "wise old man"
Foil
A character that serves as a direct contrast to another character, meant to emphasize a particular trait in that second character
Setting
the time and place where the story takes place
Mood
The atmosphere that the story creates, often created by particular word choice
