Setting
the time place and conditions in which a story takes place
plot
the sequence of related events that take place in a story
Exposition, rising action, climax, & resolution
expositon
usually at the beginning of the story where the characters are introduced, setting is established & essential background info, is exposed.
foundation of the story
rising action
part of the story where complications arise & difficulties mount for the characters. suspense begins to build as the characters struggle to find solutions to the conflicts.
problems begin to occur.
climax
the highest peak in the story usually involving the most important event, decision, or discovery that affects the outcome

resolution
the events occurring after the climax where conflicts & all plot tangles are usually resolved.

the central message in a literary work; what the writer view is on a certain aspect of humanity, society, nature, etc; themes may be stated or implied.
