Literal Language
|
Language that states facts or ideas directly. Means exactly what is stated.

Literary Periods

Basically, the period concept suggests two things: 1. Literary works can be grouped according to what they share with each other within a given time span. 2. that this grouping can be differentiated from other such chronological groupings.

|
The substitution of an incorrect word for a word with a similar sound. (Old-timer's Disease vs. Alzheimer's Disease)

An abstract idea that is thought to be a comprehensive explanation of historical experience of knowledge.

Metaphor

A comparison made between two things that are basically dissimilar, with the intent of giving added meaning to on of them.

Extended Metaphor

A metaphor that is extended throughout a poem.

Dead Metaphor
|
A metaphor, which has become so commonplace that it has lost its force, and we forget that it is not literally true.

Mixed Metaphor
|
use of two or more inconsistent metaphors in one expression.

Meter
|
The regular pattern of rhythm-this is, of stressed and unstressed syllables in a line of verse.

Metrical Foot
|
Usually consists of one stressed syllable and one or more unstressed syllables.
