Fatty acid

Molecule has two parts. Chain of carbon atoms to which hydrogen atoms are bonded and a carboxyl group.

Carboxyl group

Consists of 1 carbon atom, bonded to 1 oxygen atom by a double bond to an OH group

Saturated fats

Fats formed from fatty acids with single carbon to carbon bonds. Saturated with hydrogen

Unsaturated fats

One or more pairs of carbon atoms in the fatty acid molecules are joined together by a double or triple bond

Cholesterol

Is an essential compound, found in most animal tissues. Also plays an important part in the buildup of deposits that harden and narrow arteries
