HMGCoA Reductase Inhibitors (statins)
Atorvastatin (long half life)

1. Decrease cholesterol production in the liver.
2. Increase removal of LDL by liver from circulation.
Bile Acid Sequestrants “Resins”
‘resins’

Resins (+ve charge) bind to bile acids (-ve charge) in the intestinal lumen and prevent their reabsorption.
Ezetimibe
Selectively inhibits absorption of cholesterol from the intestine by binding to cholesterol molecule transporters.
Nicotinic Acid
Poorly understood – liver produces less triglycerides (main effect)
Fibrates
Gemfibrozil

- activate PPARa (found in liver and adipose tissue)
- increase lipoprotein lipase activity, decreasing levels of TG.
Fish oils
Omega 3 marine TG’s

- polyunsaturated FA’s
- decrease plasma TG’s but increase cholesterol
- may have anti-coagulant & anti-inflammatory effect.
