What do we say that language is arbitrary? |
Because their is no necessary or natural relationship between the words of a given language & the concepts they represent. |

Why do we say that language is creative? |
Because one can produce & understand new sentences never spoken before. No dictionary can list all the possible sentences, because that number is infinite. |

Why do we say that language is ambiguous? |
Because it could mean two different things, making it unclear. Lexical ambiguity= "note"= musical note or a short written record Structural ambiguity= "Mary had a little lamb." With mint sauce? |

The capacity to talk (or sign) messages that are unrelated to here and now. Referring to past & future. |
