Where should UAC be?
It should be in the abdominal aorta below the level of the 3rd lumbar vertebra (L3) and above the aortic bifurcation (which is usually at the bottom of L4)
Why do you want the UAC there?
It ensures that the line is below the start of the inferior mesenteric and renal arteries but still in an area of relateively high blood flow.
Where should the UVC be?
It should be in the IVC or right atrium (i.e. just above the diaphragm)
Why do you want the UVC to be there?
If the UVC tip is in the portal system - it is dangerous b/c infusion of hypertonic solutions into the portal system may thrombose the portal vein or cause hepatic cirrhosis.
What can you run through the UVC, UAC, PIA?
UVC - everything
UAC - no dopamine, dobutamine, epi, antiepileptics
PIA - only NS, 1/2NS
