Organism
things that have all the characteristics of life.
Cell
The smallest unit of life.
Unicellular
Living things that are made of only one cell.
Homeostasis
An organisms ability to maintain steady internal conditions when outside conditions change.
Specie
A group of organisms that have similar traits and are able to produce fertile offspring.
Genus
A group of similar species.
Binomial nomenclature
Gives each organism a two word scientific name.
Cell theory
States that all living things are made of one or more cells, the cell is the smallest unit of life and all new cells come from preexisting cells.
Nucleic Acid
Macromolecules that are formed when long chains of molecules called nucleotides join together.
Protein
Long chains of amino acid molecules.
Lipid
Large macromolecules that do not dissolve in water.
Carbohydrate
One sugar molecule, two sugar molecule, or a long chain of sugar molecules.
Cell membrane
The flexible covering that protects the inside of a cell from the environment outside the cell.
Cytoplasm
A fluid inside a cell that contains salts and other molecules.
Organelle
Other structures with specialized functions surrounded by the membrane.
Nucleus
part of a eukaryotic cell that directs cell activities and contains genetic info stored in DNA.
Chloroplast
Membrane bound organelles that use light energy and make food-a sugar called glucose-from water and CO2 in a process called photosynthesis.
Passive transport
The movement of substances through the cell membrane without using cell energy.
Diffusion
The movement of substances from an area of a higher concentration to an area of lower concentration.
Osmosis
The diffusion of water molecules only through membrane
Facilitated Diffusion
When molecules pass through a cell membrane using special proteins called transport proteins
Active Transport
the movement of substances through a cell membrane only using the cell's energy
Endocytosis
process during which a cell takes in a substance by surrounding it with the cell membrane
