Cell
Basic unit of life all living things. It carries out life's functions including movement, growth, and reproduction. All cells have a cell membrane, cytoplasm, and genetic material. (PLANT CELLS HAVE A CELL WALL, ANIMAL CELLS DO NOT)
Unicellular
Organisms that consist of a single cell Ex. Bacteria & Protozoa
Multicellular
Organisms that consist of many different types of specialized cells. Ex. Skin, blood, nerve cells
Cell Membrane
A structure that keeps the cells contents separate from it's external environment. It protects the cell and is "selectively permeable", which allows certain substances to move in and out of the cell.
Cytoplasm
A watery, jelly-like substance that holds other cell structures in place.
Genetic Material
All cells have this; It contains coded instructions for carrying out the cell's activities. (Inside Nucleus)
Prokaryotes
Bacteria; Its genetic material consists in a single molecule suspended in the cytoplasm.
Eukaryotic Cells
Cells that contain it's genetic material inside the cell's nucleus.
Cell Wall
Protects plant cell & gives it shape.
Ribosomes
Produce protein
Mitochondrion
Produces the cell's energy
Chloroplasts
Absorb sun's energy for the production of food. (Only plant cells have chloroplast)
Vacuole
Stores water, nutrients, wastes and other substances.
Nucleus
Directs the cell's activities
