Whats is a level line?
A line lying in a level surface and is therefore normal to the direction of gravity.
What is a datum surface?
An adopted level surface to which the elevations of point can be referred.
What is a reduced level?
A reduced level of a point is its elevation about the datum adopted.
What is a Bench Mark?
A stable reference point, the reduced level of which has been determined by precise leveling.
How do you calculate the loss in height during leveling?
Backsight minus foresight. Remember: the smaller the staff reading the higher the elevation.
Why should the level be set up half way between leveling points?
To minimise error, or at least to ensure that the error is applied equally across the points.
Why is a bench mark or known RL required during leveling?
Otherwise the elevation of the points is not known, only the change in elevation between points
What are some factors that reduce the distance between level and staff?
Heat shimmer (hard to read), large changes in elevation (staff too high or low), visual error.
What is a change point?
A point where the staff holder remains in position and the instrument (level) is moved.
Are backsight (BS) and FS recorded on different lines in a level book?
Readings from the same staff point are recorded on the SAME line in a leveling book.
