node
A device on the network.
peer-to-peer network
Computer architecture in which all of the coputers on a network are equal and there is no computer designated as the server.
proxy server
A server that acts as an intermediary between a user and the Internet.
Public Switched telephone Network (PSTN)
The world's collection of interconnected commerical and gov't owned voice- oriented systems.
router
A device that directs traffic on a network by dividing data into smaller packets that travel by different routes and then are reassembled at their destination.
server
A computer that handles requests for data, e-mail, file transfers, and other network services from other comouters (clients).
server operating system
High-end programs designed to provide network control and include special functions for connecting computers and other devices into a network.
T-1 line
A type of fiber-optic telephone line that can transmit up to 1.544 megabits per second or can be used to transmit 24 digitalized voice channels.
wide area network (WAN)
Computer network that covers a large geographical area. Most WANs are made up of several connected LANs.

wireless Internet service provider (WISP)
An ISP that provides connection speeds more than 30 times faster than dial-up connections-from 384 Kbps to 2.0 Mbps.
wireless LAN (WLAN)
A variation of a LAN that uses no physical wires.
Address Book
Part of most e-mail programsl used to keep a list of contacts and their e-mail addresses.
archiving
Saving or transfering data to a storage device or folder for the purpose of saving space of organizing the data.
attachment
A document, image, figure, or other file that you can attach to an e-mail message.
distribution list
A list of e-mail address you can use to send the same message to a group.
electronic mail (e-mail)
Transmission of electronic messages over networks.
e-mail address
an email address identifies an email box which email messages are delivered.
instant messaging
A form of electronic communication that allows you to send and receive text messages in "real time" from friends and colleagues who are currently online.

packets
Units of data sent accross a network. When a large block of information is sent, it is broken up into smaller data packets that are sent separately and then reassembled in their origianl order at the other end.
signature
Text or graphics added to the end of outgoing e-mail messages.
spam
Unsolicited commerical e-mail that is sent to many people at the same time to promote products or services; also called junk e-mail.
text messaging
Using a cell phone or other mobile device to send and receive written messages.
user agent
A software application installed on the local PC, network, or Web, such as e-mail, text message, and instant messaging programs.
