NERVES OF THE LEG
NERVES OF THE LEG
SAPHENOUS

Origin
Femoral Nerve
SAPHENOUS

Course
Descends with femoral vessels through the femoral triangle and adductor canal

Then descends with the Great Saphenous Vein
SAPHENOUS

Distribution
Supplies skin on the medial side of the leg and foot.
SURAL

Origin
Formed by the union of cutaneous branches from the tibial and common fibular nerves
SURAL

Course
Descends between heads of the Gastrocnemius

Becomes superficial at the middle of the leg

Descends with the Small Saphenous Vein

Passes inferior to lateral malleolus to lateral side of foot
SURAL

Distribution
Supplies skin on posterior and lateral aspects of leg and lateral side of foot
TIBIAL

Origin
Sciatic Nerve
TIBIAL

Course
Forms as the Sciatic bifurcates at the apex of the Popliteal Fossa and lies on Popliteus

Runs inferiorly on Tibilais Posterior with the Tibial Vessels

Terminates beneath the Flexor Retinaculum by dividing into medial and lateral plantar nerves
TIBIAL

Distribution
Supplies Posterior muscles of the leg and knee joint
COMMON FIBULAR NERVE

Origin
Sciatic Nerve
COMMON FIBULAR NERVE

Course
Forms as sciatic bifurcates at apex of Popliteal Fossa

Follows medial border of biceps femoris and it tendon

Passes over posterior aspect of head of Fibula

Goes deep to Fibualris Longus

Divides into deep and superficial fibular nerves
COMMON FIBULAR NERVE

Distribution
Skin on lateral part of posterior aspect of leg

The lateral Sural Cutaneous Nerve

The knee joint
SUPERFICIAL FIBULAR

Origin
Common Fibular Nerve
SUPERFICIAL FIBULAR

Course
Arises between Fibularis Longusand neck of Fibula

Descends in the Lateral Compartment and dives deep to become subcutaneous in the distal third
SUPERFICIAL FIBULAR

Distribution
Anterior muscles of leg

Skin on distal third of anterio surface of leg and dorsum of foot

Except skin of first interdigital cleft
DEEP FIBULAR NERVE

Origin
Common Fibular Nerve
DEEP FIBULAR NERVE

Course
Arise between the Fibularis Longus and neck of the fibula

Passes thought the Extensor Digitorum Longus and descends on Interosseous Membrane

Crosses distal end of Tibia and enters dorsum of the foot
DEEP FIBULAR NERVE

Distribution
Supplies anterior muscles of leg

Skin of first interdigital cleft

Sens articular branches to join its crosses
ARTERIES OF THE LEG
ARTERIES OF THE LEG
POPLITEAL ARTERY

Origin
Continuation of the Femoral Artery at adductor hiatus in adductor magnus
POPLITEAL ARTERY

Course
Passes through Popliteal Fossa to leg;

Ends at inferior border of Popliteus muscle by dividing into Anterior and Posterior Tibial Arteries
POPLITEAL ARTERY

Distribution
Superior, Middle and Inferior Genicular arteries to knee

Muscular branches to hamstrings and muscles of superficial posterior compartment of the leg
ANTERIOR TIBIAL

Origin
Popliteal Artery
ANTERIOR TIBIAL

Course
Passes into Anterior Compartment thru gap in superior part of the interosseus membrane

Descends on the anterior interosseous membrane between Tibialis Anterior and Extensor Digitorum Longus
ANTERIOR TIBIAL

Distribution
Anterior Compartment of the leg
DORSALIS PEDIS (DORSAL ARTERY OF THE FOOT)

Origin
Continuation of Anterior Tibial Artery distal to inferior Extensor Retinaculum
DORSALIS PEDIS (DORSAL ARTERY OF THE FOOT)

Course
Descends anteromedially to first interosseous space;

Divides into deep plantar and 1st dorsal metatarsal arteries
DORSALIS PEDIS (DORSAL ARTERY OF THE FOOT)

Distribution
Muscles of the dorsum of the foot

Pierces interosseous muscle as deep plantar artery to contribute to formation of plantar arch
POSTERIOR TIBIAL ARTERY

Origin
Popliteal Artery
POSTERIOR TIBIAL ARTERY

Course
Passes thru Posterior Compartment of leg

Terminates distal to Flexor Retinaculum by dividing into Medial and Lateral Plantar Arteries
POSTERIOR TIBIAL ARTERY

Distribution
Posterior and Lateral Compartments of the leg

Circumflex Fibular branch joins anastomoses around the knee

Nutrient artery passes to Tibia
FIBULAR ARTERY

Origin
Posterior Tibial
FIBULAR ARTERY

Course
Descends in Posterior Compartment adjacent to Posterior Intermuscular Septum
FIBULAR ARTERY

Distribution
Posterior Compartment of Leg

Perforating branches supply lateral compartment leg
