11 Cards in this Set

  • Front
  • Back

Epidermis

Covers the whole plant allowing light to penetrate through

Xylem

Carries water and minerals from the roots around the plant

Phloem

Carries dissolved sugars through the plant

Palisade mesophyll

Where photosynthesis takes place

Likely to contain chloroplasts to absorb light

Spongey mesophyll

Some photosynthesis. Has air spaces for diffusion of CO2 and O2

Guard cells

Cells that can open and close the stomata

Stomata

Opening that allows O2 and CO2 to diffuse in and out of leaf

Transpiration

Loss of water vapour from the leaves by evaporation from cells and out from the stomata

Transpiration stream

Movement of water from the roots, up the steam and to the leaves

Translocation

Movement of sugars within the plant

Factors affecting transpiration

Temperature- increase in temperature means increase in transpiration rate

Humidity- increase in humidity decreases rate of transpiration as if the air is dryer the concentration gradient is greater

Wind speed- higher winds means faster diffusion

Light- more light means faster diffusion as it will open the stomata
