Societal changes make effective leadership in the future a more challenging fast, requiring even greater sensitivity and flexibility than was ever needed before.

Robert Tannenbaum and Warren H. Schmidt

Leaders must first follow

Leaders may have not learned how to lead, but then it is difficult to become a good leader without having mastered the art of following

Leader requirements

Leading requires sensitivity to the followers position and the knowledge, based on experience, of what motivates a person to follow a good leader.

Challenges for leaders

1) multiple priorities

2) balancing competing concerns

3) The demand to accomplish more with fewer resources

President Dwight Eisenhower's demonstration

He placed a short piece of string on a table and said "pull it, and it'll follow wherever you wish; push it, and it will go nowhere at all." This illustration showed the importance of "leading from the front".

Vision should include a guide, such as:

how customers will be served; how employees will be treated; how the organization will carry out its social or environmental responsibilities; and how the company will be structured

Corporate vision

Requires an assessment of the organizations history and culture: the expectation of the stockholders, employees, customers and suppliers; and, an appreciation of the place the organization occupies in the context of greater society
