what did joseph lister do?

in 1830s he developed a microscope that magnified 1000times without distortion- technology improvement. help scientists observe the behaviour of micro-organisms.

what happened when louis Pasteur was asked to help a brewing company in 1850s?

wanted to find out why the alcohol was going bad- became interested in microorganisms. he used microscope to observe groth of organisms in the liquids, discovered heating it killed bacteria. had a research team.

what happened in 1875?

Koch began to study bacteria. gov. gave Koch a full time job and a research team. used a microscope to study anthrax. he identified the specific microbes which caused anthrax in sheep. (this spurred Pasteur on again)

why was pasteru and Koch so competitive?

france and Germany were deadly rivals. france had lost a war to Germany in 1870-71.

when was Pasteurs germ theory developed

1861- proved idea of spontaneous generation was wrong

what else did Pasteur do?

1879- chicken cholera vaccination created by chance when a chicken was injected with old germs which by chance led to immunisation.

what else did Koch do?

1882- identified microbe causing TB. 1883- cholera
