social choice theory

pornography opinions

culturalism
one's culture is what determines social behavior. culture will be the reason for conflict. Samuel Huntington- some cultures are just incompatible.
multiculturalism
our society is made up of several equal cultures to be understood in thier own logic. our strength comes from our difference.
assimilationism
our differences make us weak. we should all assimilate into one culture. often resultes in forced assimiliation because we should all be on the same page. critique of multiculturalism.
model minority theory
Panesh Pasuza proponent of. assumes difference between cultures. look at indians in US- highest taxpaying. something about indian culture is better, and other cultures have something wrong that is failing. critics say it is a result of laws.
meritocracy
only things that matter are qualifications. 'work hard, do well' legal component is color blindness.
immigration act, 1965
opens immigration to Indians and other asians. however, only ones that can come in are professionals.
colorblindness
any legislation that uses race in language is unconstitutional. disallows affirmative action. look at affirmative action as preferential treatment.

shah bano case
muslim women gets divorced. husband pays 3000 rupees according to shariah law. wife sues under indian law that says must pay monthly for rest of her life. supreme court rules he must pay monthly, agrees with shah bano.
shariah law
muslim law. koranic law. muslims become cangry with decision in shah bano, saying SC shouldn't have say about muslim law. battle about what being secular nation means.
muslim womens bill
from now on, for muslim women, use shariah law essentially overturning shah bano. gov did this because they were losing muslim vote because muslims angry over shah bano case.
burka
veil for muslim women. feminists both pro burka and anti burka.
