Gerald ford

Was president from 1974 to 1977.


He became president after Spiro agnew and Nixon resigned.



25th ammendment succession of the presidency

Ford pardons Nixon

Ford committed political suicide one month later when he granted Nixon a full pardon.


Democrats were furious. They wanted Nixon tried for crimes.


Ford didn't want a formal president locked up.

Camp David accords

Single greatest achievement as president.


Peace settlement between age old enemies Israel and Egypt.


The three leaders signed this document at the US presidential retreat camp David Maryland.


Israel had to evacuate the sinai peninsula(was occupied as a result of war) this ended the state of war between the 2 countries.

Iran hostage crisis

Carter's greatest foreign policy defeat.


Before 1979 the leader of Iran was corrupt , negative towards Islam, and supported by the US.


In 1979 the country was taken over by Islamic fundamentalists who held more than sixty Americans hostage for 444 days.


Carter's inability to resolve the issue made him look like a weak ineffectual leader.

Stagflation

This was Carter's biggest domestic issue.


The 1970's economy was bad and suffered from stagflation.


It meant the economy was not growing, unemployment was high, and inflation was high.

Three mile island and nuclear power

Nuclear power plant that almost had a melt down in the 1970's which could have killed millions of people.


Led to the ban of nuclear energy for almost 20 years.

Love canal

Neighborhood in New York built on top of radioactive waste and many residents got cancer.


Lead to a big Movement to dispose properly of dangerous materials.


Rachel Carson wrote silent spring.her book exposed the dangers of pesticides.


EPA created under Nixon. Mission to protect human and environmental health.

Regents of the university of CA vs Bakke

The supreme court ruled that college admissions could not be based on race alone. It can be considered as a factor to promote diversity but only if it is considered along side other factors on a case by case basis.


It is still controversial today.

Conservative revolution

By the end of the 70's many southerners or Sun belters had grown toyed of paying high taxes for social programs they considered uneffective. (Think lbj great society he is a democrat.) They were worried about the stagnant economy.


People who had supported the democratic made a swing to the right and became known as Reagan democrats because they supported republican Reagan. WHY...They supported a decrease in federal government power, promoted family values and patriotic ideals, reduced government regulation on business, and strengthening the national defense.

Religious right

Focused its energy on controversial social issues such as opposing abortion, blocking the equal rights amendment, protesting against bussing.


They also wanted a return to school prayer outlawed by the supreme court in 62.


They criticized affirmative action. They saw it as reverse discrimination.

Supply side economics

The belief that the economy was struggling because of excessive taxes and government spending on social programs.


Called for massive tax cuts to stimulate investments.


Economic growth would trickle down to its workers.


The economy grew but also the debt grew.

Reagan foreign policy

Reagan rejected the idea of detente. He called the Soviet union the evil empire and wanted to increase the size of the military to put pressure on the Soviets.

Fall of the Berlin wall

The Berlin was torn down November 1989. Berlin was United for the first time since 1945.

Dissolution of the Soviet union

1990 to 1991 the Soviet union went bankrupt and Russia broke into sixteen different countries and none of them became communists.

Reagan's legacy

Economy was very good.


Restored us respect around the world.


Rebuilt the republican party as conservative.


Got southerners and the religious right to become republicans.

Saddam hussein

Iraqs dictator and he invaded oil rich kuwait. This act threatened world oil sources. Going through the Persian gulf to saudia arabia.

George Bush 1989-1993

Desert storm/first Persian gulf war

After Iraq invaded the US and many others pledged to defend kuwait.


the US did this to keep political stability in the supply off oil.


Americans with disabilities act

This act prohibited discrimination against citizens with physical and mental disabilities in hiring transportation and public accommodations.

27 amendment

Prevented congress from raising its own salary. This showed public anger against the government.

Clinton's economic policy

North America free trade agreement.


Tariff=duty


Established a free trade zone between the US Canada and Mexico.


This lowered the cost of good in Mexico but also cost the US manufacturing jobs.

Temporary assistance to needy families.


Reformed aid to families with dependent children. (FDR)


the federal government gives grant's to states and states determine who is eligible for this welfare.


It sets a limit of 5 years.


Clinton scandal

Clinton was impeached for lying about a relationship with Monica Lewinsky but was not removed from office.


It hurt his popularity.

No child left behind act of 2002

An educational reform bill that tied school ratings to standardized test scores. It's highly criticized.

Kelo vs New London Connecticut

In this case the supreme court decided that eminent domain is not unconstitutional when land is taken that would be used by the public.


Taxes generated that would also be used for the public good.

9/11 2001

Four planes were high jacked and crashed. Killing close to 3,000 people.(world trade center, pentagon, Pennsylvania)


This attack was linked to Osama bin Laden and AL qaeda.


The war on terrorism dominated bush's presidency.

Patriot act

As a result of 9/11 congress Passed the patriot act.


This gave the goverment broad powers to obtain information expand surveillance and arrest powers.


This was an expansion of goverment power at the expense of civil liberties and in effort to find terriost.

Afghanistan

In response to 9/11 the us invades Afghanistan in 2001 to destroy terriost training camps and to find Osama bin Laden.
