What are the main features of the Larynx?
Epiglottis
Aryglottis folds
Vestibular Folds
Vocal Folds
Cricoid Cartilage
Location of the Larynx
1. Muscular Triangle
2. C3-C6
3. Anterior to pharynx
Mucosa of Larynx
1. Supraglottic space: Between inlet and vestibular folds

2. Ventricle: Between vestibular folds and auditory folds

3. Infraglottic Space: Between auditory folds and cricoid cartilage

4. Glottis: Inlcudes both true vocal cords and the rima glottis
What are the defining features of the larynx
Clockwise
Epiglottis
Vestibular Fold
Ventricle
Vocal Fold
Rima glottis
Corniculate Cartilage
Cuneiform Cartilage
What are the major cartilages of the larynx, how many of each are there?
Top-->Bottom
Hyoid Bone-1
Epiglottic cartilage-1
Thyroid cartilage -1
Corniculate cartilage-2
Arytenoid cartilage-2
Cricoid cartilage 1

Cueiform cartilage-located in arepiglottic folds
Laryngeal Membranes
1. Thyrohyoid Membrane: binds hyoid bone to superior edge of thyroid cartilage

2. Cricothyroid Membrane: median and lateral cricothyroid ligaments. Binds cricoid and thyroid cartilages and helps form the conus elastus

3. Quadrangular Membrane: extends b/w epigolltic and arytenoid cartilages. Inferior margin forms vestibular ligament
Conus Elastus
1. Made up of: median cricothyroid ligament, lateral cricothyroid ligament and vocal ligaments

connecting cricoid cartilage with vocal ligaments and forms roof of infraglottic space
What membranes are these?
thyrohyoid

Cricothyroid
Quadrangular membrane

Vestibular ligament
Clockwise

Thyroid Cartilage
Median Cricothyroid ligament
Cricoid Cartilage
Vocal ligament
Lateral triangluar cricothyroid ligament
Corniculate cartilage
Arytenoid cartilage
Epiglottis
Aryepiglottic m.
Thyroarytenoid m
Oblique arytenoid m
Transverse arytenoid m
Lateral cricoarytenoid m.
Posterior cricoarytenoid m.
cricothyroid m.
Laryngeal Muscles
Fxn
Innervation
Adductors: :Lateral cricoarytenoid, Oblique Arytenoid, Transverse arytenoid

Abductors: posterior cricoarytenoid

Relaxation: vocalis, thyroarytenoid

Tension: cricothyroid

All recurrent laryngeal except cricothyroid(external laryngeal)
Superior Laryngeal Nerve Branches and fxnional componenets
1. Internal Laryngeal: VE/Para Pre, VA to mucus glands and mucosa above vocal folds

2. External Laryngeal: BM(11 via 10) to cricothyroid
Recurrent Laryngeal
Targets?
Fxnal components?
BM 11 via 10 to muscles of larynx

VA, VE/ Para Pre to Mucosa and Mucus Glands of larynx BELOW vocal folds
Blood Supply to Larynx
1. Superior Laryngeal A/V, branch of superior thyroid A/V. Accompanies internal laryngeal n. piercing the thyrohyoid membrane

2. Inferior Laryngeal A/V. Branch of inferior thyroid a/v. Accompnies reccurrent laryngeal. Slides through pharyngeal gap #4 to muscles.
Innervation Above Vocal Folds
1. Internal Laryngeal(VE Para/Pre, VA)
2. Sym/Post via superior laryngeal artery
Innervation Below Vocal Folds
1. Recurrent Laryngeal(BM 11 via 10, VA, VE Para/Pre)

2. Sym/Post via inferior laryngeal artery
