What is the incidence of laryngeal tumours?

40 per million per year.

What age do laryngeal tumours tend to present?

incidence increases with age, rare below the age of 45.

What are the aetiological factors for the development of laryngeal tumours?

smoking, alcohol abuse, previous neck radiation.

What is the usual histology of laryngeal cancer?

95% of primary laryngeal cancers are SCC, the remainder are minor salivary gland tumours, neuroendocrine tumours and sarcomas.

What subsites are affected and how to they each present?

Glottis/true vocal cords - 50% - immediate hoarseness, no pain


supraglottis - 40% - may be painful


subglottis - 5% - marked stridor, some dysphagia and pain
