What is the hidden curriculum? |
The unspoken rules on how to act and communicate within the classroom. |

Why is having an understanding of the hidden curriculum important? |
It allows the students an understanding of how to act socially within the classroom. It also allows them to develop a classroom discourse with their peers and teacher. |

What is Decontextualized Language? |
Language that is often used within a classroom. The topic or language being used is about something not in the immediate environment. |

What students are at risk for having trouble with discourse in the classroom or decontextualized language? |
Students from low socioeconomic backgrounds. |

What is phonological awareness? |
The ability to understand that words are broken down into smaller pieces, called phonemes that can be spoken together to create the whole word. |

What is reading fluency? |
The ability to read a text smoothly and efficiently without having to pay attention or sound out the specific words. |

What is Metacognition? |
The ability to think about and plan one's own thinking process. |
|
Why is having good metacognitive skills important in a classroom? |
These skills are necessary for students to think about and assess whether or not they understand what is being taught. |

What are Metalinguistic skills? |
This is using language, to discuss language. This could include defining a word or listing a synonym or antonym of the word. |

What skills are needed to create a skilled reader? |
Complete language comprehension and word recognition. |

Is reading or the ability to process written language a biologically based process? |
No it is not, this is where literacy differs from oral speech and oral speech perception. |

Pre-kindergarten

What is RTI |
RTI is response to intervention. This is a process assessing if intervention within the classroom will be successful or of further services are needed for the student. |

What is RTI Tier 1? |
Tier 1 is using evidence based intervention within the classroom to assist students with reading deficits. The SLP's role will typically be one of consultation with the teacher. |

What is RTI tier 2? |
Tier 2 involves the students who are struggling being placed into smaller intervention groups. Typically the SLP will assist in running these small groups. |
|
What is RTI tier 3? |
Tier 3 is individual intervention, the SLP will often be one of the staff members running individual therapy. |
|
What are print concepts? |
The understanding that letters make up words and together they represent ideas. |

Why is classroom discourse often difficult for students from another culture? |
Much of the discourse in a classroom is based on specific cultural norms, this may differ greatly for someone from another culture, making it
difficult for them to understand the discourse. |

Why is having background knowledge important in understanding reading comprehension? |
Students with a lack in background knowledge often have trouble understanding the content of a reading selection and therefore answering correctly.

What is a personal narrative? |
A personal recount told by the child of a past experience. |

What is a script narrative? |
The student recounts a specific series of events. |
|
What is narrative Macrostructure? |
This looks at the overall structure and if the story makes sense and has cohesion. |

What is narrative Microstructure? |
This looks at the sentence structure and the vocabulary used within the narrative. |
