BMP
Basic Metabolic Panel - 7 tests (also know as "CHEM-7". The 7 parts of the CHEM-7 include tests for:
Four Electrolytes (Na+, K+, Cl-, (HCO3-) or CO2)
Blood Urea Nitrogen (BUN)
Creatinine
Glucose
Na+
Serum Sodium

Normal Range:
136 - 144 mEq/L
K+
Serum Potassium - helps nerves and muscles communicate; helps move nutrients into cells and waste products out of cells; levels are mainly controlled by the hormone aldosterone

Normal Range:
3.5 - 5.0 mEq/L
Cl-
Serum Chloride - works with other electrolytes such as K, Na, and CO2 to help keep the proper balance of body fluids and maintain the body's acid-base balance

Normal Range:
101 - 111 mmol/L
(HCO3-) or CO2
Bicarbonate - In the body, most of the CO2 is in the form of a substance called bicarbonate (HCO3-)
BUN
Blood Urea Nitrogen - what forms when protein breaks down. If the kidneys are not able to remove urea from the blood normally, the BUN level rises. A high BUN usually means that kidney function is less than normal.

Normal Range:
7 - 20 mg/dL
Cr
Creatinine - a waste product that is made when your body breaks down protein you eat and when muscles are injured. A high serum (blood) creatinine level means kidney damage

Normal Range:
0.8 - 1.4 mg/dL
Serum Glucose
The body uses this type of sugar for energy. Abnormal glucose levels can indicate diabetes or hypoglycemia (low blood sugar). Blood glucose may be measured on a fasting basis (collected after an 8-10 hour fast), randomly (anytime), or post-prandial (after a meal).

Normal Range:
Fasting: 65 - 110 mg/dL
Post-prandial: 100 - 140 mg/dL

HbA1c
Hemoglobin A1c - Not part of the BMP, but a separate test for blood sugar levels. The amount of hemoglobin A1c will reflect the last several weeks of blood sugar levels, typically encompassing a period of 120 days

Goal Range for Diabetics:
<7%
