What is one way to reduce height using a cultural method?

Cultivar selection, choose compact and dwarf varieties.

What does moisture stress cause in plants?

Taller plants due to increased turgur pressure. This causes cell elongation.

Which nutrient do you restrict to reduce vegetative(associated with upward) growth?

Nitrogen. Optimum fertilizer will result in taller plants, obvi!

What happens when you use excess fertilizer?

High EC restricts water uptake by roots which reduces turgor pressure, and thus, cell elongation.

Remember that high EC=high salt content which increases salt content inside the cells which stops what?!

What happens with high N and P levels?

Increased cell elongation!

How would you reduce growth with container selection?

Choose smaller pots for smaller plants.

How do you reduce growth with yo hands?

Slap they heads! Disturbing their heads reduces cell elongation.

How do you increase height with plant spacing?

High planting density forces plants to stretch, because they're looking for light and want to outgrow their friends.

What does reducing crop time help with?

Having a smaller plant!

KISS- keep it simple silly!

Limiting what environmental factor causes stretching(elongated growth)?

Light! Similar to tight pot spacing, the plants keep searching for more light! Unless you want this, clean your glass!

Which ratio of red and far red causes stem elongation?

A low ratio! Its caused by too tight plant spacing or naturally at the end of the day!

Average 24 hr temp does what?!

Directly affects growth but does not influence plant height! I do not understand why?!!?R someone tell me.

What does a positive DIF do?!

It aids in stem elongation! (its a higher day time temp than night)A good way to speed up plant height for things like points!

What does a negative DIF do?

It decreases stem elongation!(higher night time temps) Its a good cultural method to slow down your babies if they grow too darn quick. A morning dip does a similar thing(not sure on that)

Pinching

Remove vegetative tips means more branching and a shorter plant, but delays crop time.

Pruning

Its when you remove unwanted branches to improve health, shape and form.

Disbudding

Its when you remove early flowers to encourage vegetative growth. Its also when you remove lateral buds so that plant focuses its energy on the central bud and its apical dominance.

What is A-rest?

A growth retardent(sprang or drench). cAUSES INCREASED BRANCHING AND EARLY FLOWERING OF SEED GERANIUMS. caps lock is off now.

B-Nine

A growth retardent(spray only. Causes darker foliage, extended shelf life for bedding plants. It may delay flowering!

Bonzi

Spray or drench growth retardent.

Sumagic?

Spray or drench growth retardent.

Abscisic acid(ABA)

Foliar spray- it causes stomata to close which results in reduced water loss. This delays drought stress.

Auxins.

Promotes root devolopment of cuttings. Increases the number of roots and reduces rooting time. Its main ingredient in cutting powder!

Cytokinins? What is it?

Its a hormone that increases branching, eg holiday cacti, foliage branch. Increased bud count. Helps overcome dormancy and stimulate germantion. Reduces chlrosis of foliage. Includes Giberrellic acid.

Ethylene?

A plant hormone, can be applied for flower induction. Aids in height control. Causes accelerated ripening- bananas got way too much. Put banana in bag with avocado ja!

Applying growth retardents.

Do not spray till runoff. Use concentration of active ingredient per pot.

-Keep enviornmental effects in mind. Some less effective in higher temps! Its generally safer to spray in moring than at night!

Do not apply to veggies!

Growth control spray benefits and drawbacks

It uneven, can be human health hazard, phytoxicity. Its good because you can spot spray.

Growth control drenching benefits and drawbacks.

There's less residue.

Its safer to apply.

Requires more calculations.
