• Closed circle
circle formation, linked, closed circle. This is perhaps the most ancient form and is believed to have derived from observation and imitation of the sun’s rotation.
• Chain
linked up, circle is NOT closed. This was developed from the closed circle and thought that you could spread good luck and magic to a larger area.
• Processional
single file line or double file line. (1 male, 1 female) Originated from customs to clean the community after a hard winter (cleansing) and to ensure its continued fertility.
• Religion
used in rituals, act of gratitude for victory, still see it today. The Egyptians were the first to describe dance movement on paper, and so they are the inventors of the art of choreography

Ancient Greece, physical activity was important for everyone, including dance. Settlers in America taught pose and how to interact appropriately (discipline, good manners) thru dance.

preservation of health and the power to cure ailments through dance rituals are found in every culture. Example? Death dance was a united rhythmic effort to remove the ghost, dust the spirit from the house, quiet the emotions, and dispel the fears of those who remained.

universally used by humans to reproduce the species and to secure food. Initiations, courtships, births, and weddings are themes represented by the dance in these rites.
• Artistic
created to be performed and considered as an art form. This includes dance forms such as ballet and modern dance
• Theatrical
meant to entertain. Examples are movies, plays, musicals. Dance, including tap and jazz from movies and Broadway musicals are examples also
• Traditional
comes from a specific culture and usually has a specific social function. Example? The Romanian culture has a special dance that is performed before the spring planting at each farm
• Social/Recreational
Ballroom, swing, square, contra, line and international folk dancing are forms of dance enjoyed by people from all walks of life for recreational and social enjoyment.
• Rhythm
regular pattern of movement and/or sound. It is felt, seen, or heard.
• Time Signature
is a symbol (ex: 2/4) that establishes the duration of time. The top number indicated the number of beats per measure, and the bottom number indicated the note value or type of note.
• Tempo
rate of speed at which music is played.
• Sissone
even rhythm. Springing with both feet and landing on one foot.
• Assemble
even. Transfer of weight with a spring from one foot, lifting into the air, and landing on both feet.
• Two-Step
2/4 or 4/4 meter, uneven rhythm. Step forward on left foot, close right to left, step left, step right, close left, step right
• Polka
2/4 meter, uneven rhythm. hop, step, close, step. Start on left foot.
• Schottische: 4/4 meter, even rhythm. Step, step, step, hop; step, step, step, hop; step hop, step hop; step hop, step hop. Start with left step and right hop.
• Waltz:
¾ meter, even rhythm. Step, side, close. Start with left forward, step to the side with the right, close left to right, take weight on left. If you are doing a box waltz one person will step right backwards first
• Mazurka
¾ beat. Step left, cut with right, hop with right. Repeat.
• Closed dance position
Man puts hand on woman’s back, woman puts hand on man’s shoulder, and the left hands are joined together
• Challenge
Man and woman are facing each other with no contact.

American Dance Sampler
• History:
1620-today. Dances trace a dance tradition, are still danced today in communities and represent various dance formations and basic dance steps. At different times in history, each type has enjoyed great popularity in particular areas and with a special segment of society
• Grand March:
o Music: any lively march, two-step, or square dance tune
o Formation: double circle, couples facing the line of direction, or two single files, men in one and women in the other.
 Two single file lines, march down the center of the room.
 Couples in a double circle: in double circle and march counterclockwise.
 Inner and outer circle: men and women separate in lines and then come back together
 The cross, Virginia reel, ring up for squares, over and under, and snake out are the next moves in the dance.
• Virginia Reel
o Formation is contra dance formation, four to eight couples, partners facing.
 Forward and bow
 forward and right hand around
 forward and left hand around
 forward and do-si-do
 head couple sashays down the center and back
 head couple, right arm to partner and reels

Square Dance
• Positioning/Formations
Big circle approach: makes use of the single circle, double circle, and Sicilian circle for teaching and practicing basics that can be done without reference to the square formation. The set approach begins with the dancers in the square formation and teaches the basics in reference to positions and movement directions as they evolve from the use of a simple square dance call.
• Basic moves
honor your partner, circle left, do-sa-do (partner face, pass each other right shoulder to right shoulder, and move around each other back to back and return), promenade (partners join right hands on top left on the bottom) Weave the ring (partner face and join right hands, move and pass partner, and continue to move around the circle)
