What Can Happen During Performance Consulting?

During Perf. Consult., athletes most often will bring up issues that the consultant will be able to handle. However, at times the athletes will bring up very serious mental health problems that are outside of the consultant's jurisdiction. In this case, the person will need referral to a mental health professional.

Signs that Point to the Need for Referral

Severe problem, happening for a long time and the effects are seen across many aspects of the person's life. Unusual or extreme emotional reactions (depression, anxiety, anger, aggression)...

--> Traditional performance enhancement is not working.

Problems When Referring

Stigma behind seeing a mental health professional (seen as being a weakness), many athletes do not trust psychologists because they do not specialize with them, specialists are seen as "shrinks". Athlete may think we are trying to get rid of them, athlete may feel unsupported.

How to Solve Referral Problems

1. Establish a relationship with them

2. Show confidentiality and sensitivity

3. Refer IN --> bring mental health pro into the office to meet with you and athlete

4. Assure you will stick with athlete

These Issues May Need Referral

Identity, depression, panic attacks, injurt, negative identities (dumb jock, etc.), sexual orientation and homophobia, sex and health-related issues.

Most Crucial Issue that Needs Referral

Eating Disorders: seen more frequently when sport focuses on emphasis on weight (fighting, wrestling, etc.). Men use saunas, steam baths, exercise and women use purging and diet pills most often.

--> disturbed body image.
