COELENTERATES Phylum Cnidaria |
Body walls made of 2 layers of cells; central, saclike digestive system. Exhibit radial symmetry. E.g Hydra, jellyfish, and sea anemones. |
FLATWORMS Phylum Platyhelminthes |
Exhibit bilateral symmetry; moderate cephalization. Include: planaria (nonparasitic), flukes, and tapeworms (both parasitic). |
MOLLUSKS Phylum Mollusca |
Possess soft-bodies and hard outer shells. Like: Snails, oysters and clams. Exceptions: octopi & squid which have reduced external shells. 3 body regions: foot; VISCERAL MASS (organ place); MANTLE (may secrete shell). |
SEGMENTED WORMS Phylum Annelida |
Closed circulation, a mouth and anus. They excrete waste through METANEPHRIDIA. E.g Earthworm, leeches. |
ARTHROPODS Phylum Arthropoda |
Most diverse phylum in Kingdom. Jointed appendages, hard exoskeleton containing chitin, segmented body with head, thorax and abdomen. Open circulation. Excrete through MALPIGHIAN TUBULES. E.g Crabs, ants, spiders. |
ECHINODERMS Phylum Echinodermata |
Slow moving or sessile. Radially symmetrical, have spiny exoskeletons. Possess water vascular system ending in tube feet that function in feeding, gas exchange, and movement. E.g: Sea star, urchin, sand dollars. |
CHORDATES Phylum Chordata |
Possess: Dorsal nerve cord; hollow notochord; pharyngeal gill slits, and tail. Almost all are vertebrates. E.g Fish, Amphibians, Reptiles, Birds, and Mammals. |
