Parts of a skeletal muscle
Muscle consists of -> many fibers, and they consist of -> bundles of myofibrils(surrounded by sarcoplasmic reticulum) -> sarcomere -> thick and thin filaments (Actin & Myosin)
Sarcomere runs from Z-line to Z-line. What are the thick and thin filaments and their characteristics?
Thick
-present in the H-band and A-band in the center of the sarcomere. -contain myosin (has 6 polypeptide chains, 1 pair of heavy chains, 2 pairs of light chains) and each myosin molecule has 2 heads attached to a single tail. Thin -are anchored at the Z-line -are present in I bands and A-bands (interdigitate with Myosin/thick filaments) -contain Actin, tropomyosin, troponin. ***Troponin is a complex of 3 globular proteins. Troponin T- binds the troponin complex to tropomyosin, troponin I-inhibits the interaction of actin and myosin, Troponin C-Ca2+ binding protein that when bound to Ca2+ permits interaction of actin and myosin*** |
