Meanings of Present and Past Participles
Present: nouns modified by a present participle are doing something.

Past: if modified by a past participle, then something has been done to the noun, or the past participle shows something that the noun has done.
Past Participle used with sein to express State of Being
When a form of sein is used with the past participle of a transitive verb, the past participle functions as a predicate adjective describing a state of being or status.
