What is the Gingival Contour Plaque Index (GCPI)?
Recently introduced and validated method of measuring plaque accumulation in dogs
It focuses on plaque accumluated along the gingival margin
Why does it appear important to measure the plaque accumulation along the gingival margin?
Plaque that accumulates in this area leads to gingival inflammation and, potentially, periodontitis
How was this study performed?
A 6-month plaque and gingivitis study was conducted to demonstrate the clinical research application of the GCPI and to ensure that documented quantification of plaque-reducing efficacy could be related to a reduction in gingivitis
What are the advantages of the GCPI?
Ability to quantify plaque accumulation in an awake dog with fewer research personnel and more efficient time use

The study panel consisted of 14 beagle dogs (ages b/w 1.3-10.8 years)

A gingival contour probe (probe that is marked in mm, however curved compared to the straight ones we usually use), was used to measure the length of the gingival margin from the midpoint of the mesial surface, along the buccal surface, to the midpoint of the distal surface at the point where the gingiva contacts the tooth, as well as the length of the plaque along this contour
What teeth were scored in this study?
Maxillary I3, canine, P1-P4, and M1
Mandibular canine, P2-P4
What was the gingival grading system 0-3?
GI0: normal gingiva
GI0.5: mild inflammation, slight redness
GI1: moderate inflammation and redness, no bleeding upon probing
GI2: moderate inflammation with severe redness, bleeding on probing
GI3: severe inflammation and redness, edema, ulceration and spontaneous bleeding
What were the findings?***Do I have this right**
When evaluating GCPI before day 15 of the test and control groups (there was no real difference in the plaque accumulation of the groups, however after day 15 the plaque accumulation did become statistically significant (test group had less plaque)
With the gingivitis, there was a significant difference b/w the groups and the test group had lower scores of gingivitis
If allowed to accumulate, plaque may lead to gingivitis and possibly periodontitis
An association has been demonstrated b/w periodontitis and systemic disease in dogs. Control of supragingival plaque can attenuate the development of gingivitis
Finding effective methods to accurately and reproducibly quantify plaque attenuation has lead to the development of plaque quantification protocols for use in animals
