ASC associated with?
Alport's, trauma
PSC associated with?
Steroids, DM-2
Oil droplet cataract assoc w/?
Galactosemia. Def: outpouching of nuclear material through post capsule weak spot. Seen as oil droplet on transillumination.
Type of cataract seen in Down syndrome?
Cerulean (bluish deposits cortically, usually no sx), also seen in puberty
POW #1 CE w/ whitish membrane over iris. Dx and Tx?
Epithelial down-growth. Dx: argon will turn this sheet white, will darken iris (map out sheet).

Tx: ASAP OR for removal. Will get glc from PAS and endos clogging TM, likely will req. trab
What is pictured? Pathophys/stats? Tx?
What is pictured? Pathophys/stats? Tx?
PCO: lens epithelial cells migrate across PC w/ contraction of secreted collagen matrix.

28% visually-significant PCO at 5-yr post-CE (BCSC)
Tx: YAG capsulotomy

Incidence: acrylic (lowest) < silicone < PMMA
What is pictured? pathophys?
What is pictured? pathophys?
Eischnig pearls, aka "soap bubbles," "fish eggs." When PCO clusters into large spherical aggregates.
What is pictured? Association(s)?
What is pictured? Association(s)?
Soemmering ring: epithelial prolif btw ant and post capsules, seen in CE/aphakia, congenital aphakia.

Assoc: Lowe syndrome (eye/neuro/renal), Hallerman-Streiff (bird facies + cataract)
Mgmt of chronic endophthalmitis post-CE. Org?
Org: P. acnes. Can see hypopyon, PCO-like stuff, ant vitritis, mutton-fat (gran) KPs

Tx: try intracam vanco (usually fails). If no response, AV+partial vs. total capsular bag, IOL removal may be required.
Define:
1. chatter
2. stroke (length)
3. cavitation
4. duty cycle
1. chatter: phaco repels lens pieces from tip (-)
2. stroke: distance phaco tip travels (usually 2-4mm)
3. cavitation: formation of bubbles at tip causing lens breakdown
4. duty cycle: % of time of set time period phaco is on
Type of cataract? Complication?
Type of cataract? Complication?
Morgagnian cataract. Can cause phacolytic glc.

Cerulean: bluish (Down or A/D congenital types)
Hypermature: white/liquified cortex (phacolytic)
Intumescent: fattens, phacogenic glc
What is thickness of ant vs. post capsules? Lyte composition w/in lens? Which lens cells are newest?
Ant= 12-21 u
Post= 2-9 u
Newest: cortex/periph

Lens is apical-in epithelial cells, so Na-K ATPase pumps K, Ca inside (and NaCl out, like inside of a cell).
28yo h/o atopic dermatitis c/o reduced VA. Type of cataract?
ASC (up to 25% in 20s-30s). Also: PSC but much less so.
2-lens combo most likely to create interlenticular membrane (ex: high hyper or >36D lens system)?
2 acrylic lenses in the capsular bag.

Options: 2 silicone lenses in bag, 1 sulcus/1 bag, etc (all better options)
Dx? Associated s/s (systemic & ocular)?
Dx? Associated s/s (systemic & ocular)?
Christmas-tree cataract in myotonic dystrophy.
A/D
Systemic: balding, infertility, slow mm release, cardiac conduction delays
Ocular: ptosis, pig ret, CPEO-like EOM weakness, hypotony (type I myotonic)
