Internal evidence that John is the author of John?

1. Early Church affirms that John was the one who wrote it.



2. Since it is dated very late in the first century, and we also know that John lived late in life, it is possible that John could have written it.



3. If there is evidence that the Gospel was written earlier, prior to the destruction of temple, John could have been the writer.

What does John's gospels contribute to our understanding to who God is?

Logos (uniquely John) (used 128x’s in the gospels). John identifies Jesus as the Word. · We learn the pre-existence of the Son. God (uniquely John). "My Lord and my God" - huge confession of who Jesus is. Seen as the true and unique agent of God, doing things only God can do and say things only God can say. "I Am" statements.

How does John add to our understanding of Christ’s death?

1. The cross is truly hell.



2. If he had been stoned or beheaded, it wasn't a true picture of agony.



3. He is "the cursed" that the OT talks about. "My God, my God. Why have you forsaken me?"



4. It's not all about his death; it's also about his suffering.

What are the hallmarks the of resurrection?

Not resuscitation but resurrection: The body wan't the same, Jesus' body stopped decaying, biblical hope that we will be resurrected.



Resurrection was necessary (Validates his claims and validates the cross, but also shows us what is to come)

John 20:30-31

"Jesus performed many other signs in the presence of his disciples, which are not recorded in this book. But these are written that you may believe that Jesus is the Messiah, the Son o f God, and that by believing you may have life in his name."

Evidence Against the John wrote the gospel

1. 1. The phrase "The disciple whom Jesus loved" is a weird way to refer to yourself



2. John is from Galilea, but the events of the book focus much more on Jerusalem than all the other Gospels



3. If John was present at the transfiguration, he was present at gethsemane, and Lord's Supper yet he never mentions these things - synoptics say he was there yet John doesn't include it?



4. Some scholars date John much later than the other gospels so John would have been dead….
