Outline the steps in trauma assessment and management

1) The Primary Survey

2) The Secondary Survey

3) The ongoing exam

Describe the ITLS Primary Survey

Starts with the scene size up. If safe, initial assessment next. Lastly, a rapid trauma survey or focused exam.

Explain the initial assessment and how it relates to the rapid trauma survey and the focused exam

Initial assessment allows EMS to identify any life threatening conditions. This information allows EMS to proceed with either a rapid trauma survey(Brief but head to toe) for more serious situations or with a focused exam for patients with a normal initial assessment.
