Name:
Ipratropium (atrovent)
Class:
Anticholinergic; Bronchodilator
Action:
1) inhibits interaction of acetylcholine at receptor sites on bronchial smooth muscle
2) Causes bronchodiliation
Use:
Persistent bronchospasm refractory to B2 agonists
Side effects:
Tachycardia
CONTRAindications
Known hypersensitivity to Ipratropium, atropine, alkaloid, soy bean protein peanuts
Precautions:
1) When used in combination with Beta agonist (e.g. metaproterenal, albuterol) the beta agonist is always administered first
2) Allergic reactions may be produced by Atrovent including urticaria, angioedema, rash or worsening bronchospasm
Preparations:
1) 0.5mg/2.5 ml NS premix
2) 0.5mg administered via handheld nebulizer. Typically administered mixed with Albuterol via nebulizer
Pediatric Dose:
Not use pediatric Pt's
Route:
Via handheld nebulizer
