list the 2 categories of mechanical coantrol and the 3 and 6 subcategories of each, respectively

1. physical exclusion

-crushing

-removal

-exclusion

2. environmental manipulation

-light

-sound

-moisture

-temperature

-electricity

-electromagnetic energy

explain exclusion and give some examples

-barriers and adhesives

example: plastic lined trenches for colorado potato beetle, gravel barriers, mesh windows, sticky banding around trees to catch insects that walk

explain removal and give some examples

literally removing the bugs

-examples: bug vacuum, handpicking

explain temperature as an environmental manipulation tactic. and the 4 types of high temperature treatments

use unfavourable temperatures over a long period of time to reduce insect activity and eventually cause death

-can't do it in the field but can do it post-harvest

-also definitely for export products, shock em in cold for a period of time first

4 high temp treatments:

1) dry heat - high pressure hot air for circulation

2) wet heat - hot water dipping, more effective than dry heat but probably more work intensive (e.g. for greenhouse ornamentals, dip em)

3) steam - for cleaning contained spaces like greenhouses

4) burning - modify propane flamers for example, space out so they flame between crops. good for things that develop resistance quickly like colorado potato beetles

3) steam

4) burning

explain moisture as an environmental manipulation tactic

decreasing RH can affect oviposition of pests, but also the activity of predatory insects

-spray plants with cold water to dislodge aphids

explain electromagnetic energy as an environmental manipulation tactic

-long wavelength: for heat, mostly. but only really effective indoors

-medium wavelenth: light and UV radiation for light traps

-short wavelength: <1 nm, for sanitizing stored products

explain sound as an environmental manipulation tactic

-goal is to repel insects or modify behaviour, has been done in lab but not in field/commercial situations

explain light as an environmental manipulation tactic

different coloured light can attract or repel insects

-use light traps in greenhouses

-or use yellow bulbs that don't attract insects

explain electricity as an environmental manipulation tactic

e.g. electric fly swatters, or electric grates that are used with light traps
