What cells make up the epithelium and what are their function?
Stratified squamous works as a barrier, protection.
Simple Columnar's function is absorption.
What is the lamina propria composed of, and what does it contain?
loose connective tissue layer that contains blood and lymphatic vessels.
What is the composition and function of the muscularis mucosa?
Thin smooth muscle layer that functions as independent movement of mucosa.
What predisposes someone to Mallory-Weiss tears?
Tiny defects in the muscularis mucosa.
What is the composition of the submucosa and what does it contain?
Dense irregular connective tissue that contains larger blood and lymphatic vessels and submucosal (Meissner's) autonomic plexus of nerves.
The muscularis externa is comprised of what 2 layers of muscle?
Inner circular, closest to epithelium, and outer longitudinal layer of smooth muscle.
What runs in between the 2 layers of muscle in the muscularis externa?
Myenteric (Auerbach's) nerve plexus
What is serosa comprised of?
loose CT covered with a simple squamous epithelium.
What is Adventitia?
binds surfaces outside peritoneal cavity to posterior abdominal wall, comprised of loose CT only
What is Hirschsprung disease?
absence or reduction in the number of ganglion cells of myenteric and/or submucosal plexuses
What does Chagas disease primarily effect?
Nervous system and heart.
8-year-old female presents with abdominal pain that is found to be Chagas disease. What components of the colon wall is most likely to be involved?
Myenteric plexus
