Anatomy
Study of structure and relationship to function.
Gross anatomy
study of structure that can be dissected & observed with the unaided eye.
Microscopic anatomy
study of structures & details invisible to the naked eye.
Morbid anatomy
deviation from the normal (used for pathology). When an animal becomes diseased or its organs function abnormally.
Systematic anatomy
groups of organs closely related in their function that make up a body system.
Live anatomy
Foundation of clinical work. Within this category=surface, applied, surgical, radiological.
Dorsal
Structures which lie towards the back or the corresponding surface of the head & tail.
Ventral
structures which lie towards the belly or the equivalent surface of the head or tail.
Cranial
structures which lie towards the head.
Caudal
structures which lie towards the tail.
Rostral
(within the head) towards the nostrils.
Median plane
divides the body into 2 symmetrical right & left halves.
Sagittal plane
any plane parallel to the median plane
Paramedian
close to the median plane.
Dorsal plane
parallel to the dorsal surface.
Transverse plane
transects the head & the limbs perpendicular to its own long axis.
Dissection
on dead material
observation
essential; study of proportions, posture, bony projections, etc. (age, breed, sex, weight changes, pregnancy)
Bones
Identify by rigidity
Muscles
Contract
Arteries
detect by pulsation
Percussion
resonance when overlying skin is struck a sharp blow. Gas filled organs are more resonant than solid or fluid filled ones.
Auscultation
normal acttivities of certain organs produce a sound continuously or intermittently. I.e. gas or ingesta in stomach + intestines.
Radiographical anatomy
x-rays
Ultrasonagraphy
sound waves
Endoscopy
light tube passed through external orifices-natural or otherwise
Skin
covers the body & protects it from injury + many other functions. Hair coat is characteristic of mammals.
-->epidermis, dermis, subcutis/hypodermis
