Excerpt from- Dust Tracks on a Road Interpretation: There were many struggles, but the people of the Harlem Renaissance had a fighting spirit to keep from being discriminated often.


If We Must Die Interpretation: He knows there isn't a good chance of them winning the war against discrimination but has faith that even if they die they will make a difference in the country.


I, Too, Sing America: His metaphor with being sent into the kitchen was standing for discrimination. He said he will laugh and get stronger and eventually there will no longer be discrimination against him and he will be on the same level of all other Americans.

It seems to be a common theme for them to take any job that they can do well in to support their family. They are in need for their children to get an education, to support their parents, and also their spouses. They are in poverty and are in need of a job. They ask for things to help them move to the north without leaving their families behind not knowing if their family would survive without their income.

It was a common theme for them to mostly just move north from where they were. They also if in the south west would move to California or to the Midwest. If they were on the east coast they would commonly move to places like New York.
